1. Can I print the interactive maps?
Yes. We are developing an improved system, but for now, the best method is to place your cursor over the map, right click with your mouse, and then save the image (.jpg works well) to your hard drive. This image can then be printed using any image viewing program, or you can insert the image into Word or WordPerfect. The improved system should be available by June 2003.

1. How do I print the Assessor Map to fit a letter size page?
Use the TiffSurfer print button. Under properties choose paper orientation to be "landscape", under layout choose "fit to page".
2. Is there a way to print a zoomed in area of a map in TiffSurfer?
Yes. Use the zoom and the pan tools to get the image you want on the screen. Use the TiffSurfer print button. For PRINT RANGE choose "selection", for PRINT SIZE choose "no scaling". This will print the portion of the map that you see on the screen.
3. I have made notes and drawn stuff on the Assessor Map image. I am done with that job and want a clean map but it comes back with my notes. How do I get the original back?
The notes are on your C drive. When you ask for that same map it calls for your notes. To remove the notes go to "C:\Program Files\Tiff surfer\Annotations" the map number will be there with a file extension of ".ann". Delete this file.
4. TiffSurfer problems?
Occasionally TiffSufer will not display the Assessor map. This usually occurs when you've first entered an incorrect Map Number, and then entered a correct Map Number. The best procedure to fix this known issue, is to delete your browsers cache and then re-enter the Assessor Map Number. (Credit to Joseph Bova)
At other times when TiffSurfer won't display the Assessor Map properly, downloading Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or Version 6.0 will fix the problem. (Credit to Jim Hickey)
5. When I view an assessment map sometimes they have a detail map within the map. How do I view the detail map?
In this new search there is a button above the map to access the detail map. The button only appears if there is a detail map. It will say "detail map" or "map list" if there is more than one.

1. How often is the data updated?
It varies based on the data. Zoning changes are made the same week that the Board of Commissioners approve them. Tax Lots are updated monthly, all mistakes are corrected within 24 hours. Some data, such as Soils and Streams do not change.
2. Can AutoCad read Shapefiles?
Version that precede AutoCAD 2002 cannot read shapefiles. However there are several software products that can convert the Shapefile into a format readable. Feature Manipulation Engine is one such product.
In Autocad2002: if you have the Map Software package installed, you can import shape file by going to Map > Tools > Import to read ESRI Shapefiles into a CAD drawing.
If you are working in ArcGIS 8.x: Open up ArcCatalog. Click on ArcToolBox. Once in ArcToolbox, expand the "Conversion Tools" section, then scroll down to "Export From Shapefile" and expand that section. Click on the "Shapefile to DFX" tool.

1. How accurate are the maps?
The Tax Lots were recently remapped using GPS control set by the County Surveyor. In some urban portions of the County, the accuracy is +/- 3 feet. In rural lands, the accuracy is generally +/- 10 feet, and for resource lands (e.g., BLM, USFS, Mt Ashland) the accuracy is +/- 40 feet.
2. Can I print the PDF maps?
Yes. Adobe's Acrobat Reader program has the ability to print the maps. Some of the maps may be larger than what your printer can handle. When PDF maps are opened in Acrobat, the size of the map is displayed in the lower left Status Bar. When using Acrobat to print these maps, select the Print icon on Acrobat, not the browser Print option, and then in the Print dialog box, make sure the option "Fit To Page" is selected. There are some limitations in that a map designed to be 24 X 36 inches will not look well on a 8.5 X 11 printer.
3. Is there a way to print a zoomed in area of a map in Acrobat?
Yes. At the Text Select Tool, hold down your mouse, select the third icon on the right -- the Graphics Select Tool. Once you've selected an area, then right click on the mouse and select Print.
4. How long do I have to wait for my tax lot boundary change to be reflected on the map?
According to Ann Cacka, the Cartographic Supervisor in the Assessment Department, the answer to this question depends on the following:
(1) Work is processed as quickly as possible once all the criteria have been met for the change. Taxes must be paid in full prior to any boundary change, and documentation reflect the correct title and legal descriptions. Hundreds of boundary changes are completed each year, each change taking their turn for processing. Depending on what time of year, the backlog might be substantial.
(2) Is your documentation correct? The parties that own the property must sign the documentation as title is held. Example: Bob and June Brown Trustees of the Brown Family Trust can not sign as Bob and June Brown because that is not they way they hold title.
June Elizabeth Brown can not sign as Liz Brown.
The property change must be correctly described, addresses and the Assessor's map and tax lot number are not a legal description. If the description is in doubt, we suggest you confer with a title company, surveyor, or attorney for assistance.
(3) When did you record the documentation for the boundary change? Oregon State Law requires that all ad valorem taxes be paid in full prior to a boundary change. The taxes become a lien against the property on July 1st, the beginning of the tax year, but are not yet payable until certification of roll for collection, on October 25th.
(4) Did you prepay your taxes during this time period? Subdivisions and Partition Plats must prepay taxes prior to recording from July 1st thru October 25th. The prepay tax statement is a calculated estimate of the amount due on October 25th. The property owner must pay the difference if the prepay amount was under the true amount due, and a refund will be made if an overpayment was made. An underpayment will delay the boundary change being processed.
(5) Do you pay your taxes in full by November 15th or do you pay them on the trimester schedule? Taxes can be paid in full by November 15th or the payments can be made in thirds, November 15th, February 15th and May 15th. The boundary change will not be completed until the taxes are paid in full.
So how long will the boundary change take to be reflected on the map? From three weeks to seven months, if the documentation is correct and taxes paid.
