G o o g l e Earth Files

OVERVIEW

This is Jackson County’s first effort at posting Google Earth Keyhole Markup Language (KML) files on our SmartMap web site. We have tried to create several files that would be useful to County residents. We will be monitoring how many people use this resource to determine if we will continue to post different Google Earth files, and to make updates to the existing files we have posted. We already have some changes in mind for the existing files, but we want to make sure this is a resource that people use.

NOTE: To ensure the best results, make sure you are using the latest version of Google Earth.

We hope you find this resource valuable. You can email the GIS Services Manager, Keith Massie, with any comments or suggestions.

Downtown Ashland in 3D

This 3D overlay shows most of the commercial buildings in downtown Ashland.  We have tried to portray the buildings in a realistic manner, including coloring the polygon the same as the actual building and using digital photographs as the faces of some buildings.

Jackson County Google Earth Settings

To properly view these buildings, we recommend that you use the following settings.  To adjust your setting, go to the 'Tools' pull-down menu and select 'options'.

Mike’s Jackson County Area Places

This file was created by Mike Savage, a GIS staff person in the County’s Development Services program. It lists numerous locations throughout Jackson County. Try double-clicking on each location to see the various perspective views. My favorites are the Rogue River Gorge, Meandering Rogue River, and Gold Ray.

Historic Fires

This overlay shows past fires in Jackson County from 1910 – 2003. We will be adding fires that have occurred since 2003 in an update planned for April 2007.

Information that can be found as part of the Legend includes the Fire Name and number of acres that are inside the fire perimeter. Since a wildfire does not burn all of the area inside it’s perimeter, the number of acres should be used only as a guide, e.g. the Abbott Creek Fire (1112 acres) was bigger then the Huckleberry Fire (1814 acres).

Vineyards by Region

This is a two-county overlay depicting vineyards mapped by Jackson County. The newer vineyards may not be shown as the most recent mapping update was completed in 2004. The vineyards are colored based on their Region.

  • Applegate – Light Green
  • Illinois – Dark Green
  • Lower Bear – yellow
  • Rogue – Orange
  • Upper Bear – Light Blue

For each polygon, the following information can be found in the Legend. The Name of the vineyard and the number of acres.

Forestland – Urban Interface (SB 360)

This overlay depicts the two wildfire hazard zones in Jackson County that were identified as part of the Forestland – Urban Interface project. The zones are Extreme (red) and High (orange).

Information that can be found as part of the Legend, click the right point black triangle next to the file in Google Earth, includes the ID number (not real meaningful) and the number of acres of each separate polygon.

NOAA - NW Radar Loop (Animated Weather)

This information is provided by the National Weather Service and shows base radar reflectivity for the Pacific Northwest.

Make sure you have Google Earth version 4.0 or greater and use the control that will appear at the top of the screen to control the animation. It takes a few seconds to load the images from NOAA the first time it is run, but will then get smoother.

Eiffel Tower 3D

3D Model of the Eiffel Tower

Make sure you have Google Earth version 4.0 or greater.
